Wisdom Teeth Commonly Erupt with a Bit of Discomfort

Posted on 7/25/2019 by Cane Bay Family Dentistry
Wisdom Teeth Commonly Erupt with a Bit of DiscomfortNot everyone has wisdom teeth, and for those of us that do, they don't always erupt. However, if your wisdom teeth do break through the gums, you may experience a bit of discomfort.

For some people, infection and impacted wisdom teeth may even require extraction, so it is important that you know what to expect when your wisdom teeth come in.

Signs that Your Wisdom Teeth Are Coming In

The emergency of the wisdom teeth through the gums is painful for some people, and you may not know exactly what is going on in the back of your mouth. Signs that it could be the wisdom teeth erupting include pressure on the gums at the back of the mouth, swollen gums, visible cuts in the gums, and persistent headaches or earaches. Brushing or rinsing the affected area vigorously could provide relief, and this is another sign that it is your wisdom teeth.

When the Wisdom Teeth Are Especially Painful

Sometimes, the wisdom teeth feel quite painful when they are trying to emerge. This occurs if there isn't enough room for them to fully break through the gums. The tooth may try to erupt at a strange angle, pushing up against the other teeth. This problem is known as impaction, and it likely will require extraction in order to fully remove the tooth.

Another reason you may experience pain is if the eruption causes the other teeth in the move to crowd and shift. Not only could this change the alignment and appearance of your smile, but it may also cause pain and discomfort if the teeth are pushing up against each other. Dental intervention may be necessary to relieve your discomfort and save your smile.

If your wisdom teeth are erupting, give us a call. We'll ensure that they are healthy and that your smile won't be negatively impacted.
