Is Gum Disease Still Possible if You Have Dental Implants?

Posted on 2/29/2020 by Cane Bay Family Dentistry
Is Gum Disease Still Possible if You Have Dental Implants?Dental implants are devices used to restore a missing tooth. Getting an implant requires oral surgery and has a relatively long healing time.

Unlike other methods to restore teeth, dental implants are one of the only methods that supports the jawbone. They are comprised of three parts: a screw, a connector, and a false tooth.

Dental implants are necessary for people who have lost a tooth. Missing a tooth causes several negative consequences on dental health. One, it makes it harder to brush your teeth. This means bacteria can grow in your mouth more easily. Two, people missing teeth are susceptible to gum disease because of an exposed gum line. Finally, people missing a tooth are at risk for jawbone deterioration.

Why Gum Disease is Still a Threat with Dental Implants

While many people get dental implants as a result of suffering from gum disease, it's still possible to get gum disease with one. Dental implants help you maintain a healthy mouth, but your gums still can become infected. Some people think that false teeth don't need to be brushed, but this isn't true. Bacteria can still eat away at a false tooth and the gums.

In order to maintain good dental health with dental implants, you must take good care of your teeth. It's necessary to brush your teeth at least twice a day as well as floss them. Besides this, it's important to make regular visits to our dental office for cleanings. Cleanings will help you remove built up bacteria in your mouth that flossing and brushing can't get.
