When it comes to snacking, perhaps what you don't eat is more important than what you do eat. Sweets, crisps and biscuits are probably the most convenient snacks but with a little thought and effort, it is possible to snack on produce which is much better for your teeth, your general health and your figure! The types of produce can be split into two main categories detailed below. I have also taken the practicality of the produce as a snack into account, for instance, there is no point in recommending garlic or raw onion because no one wants smelly breath. Despite its beneficial effects, broccoli would make a poor snack due to the inconvenience of carrying bags of cooked broccoli around with you!
Raw Fruit and Vegetables
Fruit and vegetables are good for you because they are high in fiber and take more chewing than other foods. Chewing is very good for oral health because chewing food stimulates the production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva has natural antibacterial properties that fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Carrots make an excellent snack because, as well as being high in vitamins, their fibrous texture and natural juiciness acts as a natural toothbrush. Similarly, celery has beneficial vitamins whilst acting as a natural toothbrush. Celery also contains antioxidants that can help with gum disease and prevent inflammation. Apples make a satisfying snack whilst having an excellent cleaning effect on your teeth. However, they do contain sugar, so it is best to rinse your mouth with water after eating apples when possible. Strawberries make a good snack because, as well as containing vitamins and fiber, they contain malic acid which is a natural tooth whitener.
Dried Fruit and Nuts
Raisins make a very pleasant snack and they contain fiber, vitamins and also phytochemicals which are thought to fight the bacteria which cause cavities and gum disease. Raisins are, of course, quite high in sugar so must be eaten sparingly. Almonds are high in calcium and their abrasive texture has a cleaning effect, not to mention being easy to carry and good to eat. Seeds, especially poppy, sesame and chia seeds are all worth considering as a snack. They are high in calcium and their rough texture works to clean plaque from the teeth. Want to find out more? "The atmosphere, attention, care, and professionalism of the staff is like no other experience. They've taken care of my 4 year old granddaughter who actually loves going to the dentist mainly because of the kid-friendly atmosphere and attention she receives at Cane Bay Dentistry. One word to express Cane Bay Dentistry: Phenomenal!!!!"
"First time visiting and the experience was phenomenal!!! Super friendly staff made me feel very comfortable with the entire process even broke down costs and prices BEFORE performing tasks which rarely happens at dental visits for me. Overall highly recommend this office!"
"I had a great experience at CB Family Dentistry. Had to bring my child twice in less than a week for follow up and their outstanding service is consistent. The staff is friendly and helpful, the office is clean, almost no wait before being called in and the appointment availability and choices are great. The DMD was fantastic to my child which made procedures go very smooth."
