Best Produce for Snacking on Between Meals

Posted on 11/16/2020 by Cane Bay Family Dentistry
Best Produce for Snacking on Between MealsWhen it comes to snacking, perhaps what you don't eat is more important than what you do eat. Sweets, crisps and biscuits are probably the most convenient snacks but with a little thought and effort, it is possible to snack on produce which is much better for your teeth, your general health and your figure! The types of produce can be split into two main categories detailed below. I have also taken the practicality of the produce as a snack into account, for instance, there is no point in recommending garlic or raw onion because no one wants smelly breath. Despite its beneficial effects, broccoli would make a poor snack due to the inconvenience of carrying bags of cooked broccoli around with you!

Raw Fruit and Vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are good for you because they are high in fiber and take more chewing than other foods. Chewing is very good for oral health because chewing food stimulates the production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva has natural antibacterial properties that fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Carrots make an excellent snack because, as well as being high in vitamins, their fibrous texture and natural juiciness acts as a natural toothbrush. Similarly, celery has beneficial vitamins whilst acting as a natural toothbrush. Celery also contains antioxidants that can help with gum disease and prevent inflammation. Apples make a satisfying snack whilst having an excellent cleaning effect on your teeth. However, they do contain sugar, so it is best to rinse your mouth with water after eating apples when possible. Strawberries make a good snack because, as well as containing vitamins and fiber, they contain malic acid which is a natural tooth whitener.

Dried Fruit and Nuts

Raisins make a very pleasant snack and they contain fiber, vitamins and also phytochemicals which are thought to fight the bacteria which cause cavities and gum disease. Raisins are, of course, quite high in sugar so must be eaten sparingly. Almonds are high in calcium and their abrasive texture has a cleaning effect, not to mention being easy to carry and good to eat. Seeds, especially poppy, sesame and chia seeds are all worth considering as a snack. They are high in calcium and their rough texture works to clean plaque from the teeth.
