Posted on 4/12/2021 by Cane Bay Family Dentistry
Benefits and Limitations of Laser DentistryThanks to advancements in dental technologies, a number of dental procedures can now be performed with the help of laser. Laser dentistry is an effective, safe, painless, and quick option to treat oral conditions. At Cane Bay Family Dentistry, and can use hard and soft tissue lasers to treat your oral issue.

Types of Lasers Used in Dentistry

There are two types of lasers used in laser dentistry: soft tissue laser and hard tissue laser.

•  Soft Tissue Laser: Soft tissue lasers can be absorbed by water and hemoglobin and hence can cut through gums and blood vessels, making them very useful during treatments that involve removing or reshaping gums or creating troughs around gums. They are also used to treat periodontal disease, canker sores, ulcers, and thick frenulum.
•  Hard Tissue Laser: Hard tissue laser can be absorbed by minerals in the bone; hence they can cut through teeth. These lasers can be used to prepare and shape teeth for a bonding or crown placement. They also prevent overheating the soft tissue in your tooth including the dental pulp and nerves.

Benefits of Lasers in Dentistry

Laser dentistry offers various benefits to patients. These include:

•  Reducing the need for sutures.
•  Minimizing bleeding during oral surgery and improving blood clotting.
•  Accelerating tissue regeneration and healing.
•  Lowering the risk of bacterial infections.

Limitations of Lasers in Dentistry

Laser dentistry comes with a few limitations as well.

•  Laser cannot be used on teeth that have dental restorations like amalgam fillings.
•  Lasers do not completely eliminate the need for traditional dental equipment like drills, which will still be required to shape teeth and adjust bites.
•  Lasers cannot be used during certain procedures depending on the state of your teeth and gums.
