The Benefits of Dental Implants
Before the introduction of dental implants in the 1960s, patients had very few options they could turn to when they lost a tooth. They could get a fixed dental bridge, or they could get a partial or a complete denture, but they had little other recourse for their missing tooth. While dentures and fixed dental bridges have their benefits, they do not have the same advantages that you could get from a dental implant.
Over five million satisfied Americans have turned to dental implants to restore their smile, making it a fantastic treatment option for so many people. Dental implants have so many advantages, making them an excellent choice for many of our patients. We here at Cane Bay Family Dentistry love seeing the transformation in the smiles of our valued patients after they get dental implants!
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a safe and reliable treatment option for patients who have lost one or more of their permanent, adult teeth. Unlike dentures or fixed dental bridges, these are surgically placed below the gumline, directly into the jawbone. They cannot be removed for cleaning and do become part of your jaw, due to a process called osseointegration. That means that your bone material builds up over the implant itself, making it strong and durable.
Dental implants are made of three main parts. The first part is the titanium screw, or post, which is placed directly into the jawbone. Once the surgical site heals, then the abutment is attached to the post. This abutment, or the connector piece, will attach the implant to the restoration. The restoration is also called a crown and is the part of the implant that resembles the actual tooth.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
There are many advantages of dental implants that help make them a superior choice for many patients over other treatment options. For instance, they are quite natural looking and strong and durable. They can completely restore your bite force, allowing you to bite, chew, and eat without fear of an embarrassing mishap. They are also permanent and can last you your entire life if you take care of them.
Dental implants can also improve your speech, making it easier for you to speak clearly. They are also a great way to boost your self-esteem, as they can completely restore your smile. Not only can they make your smile look better, though, they can also make your face look fuller, healthier, and more youthful. When you lose a tooth, gum and bone loss may quickly follow. Dental implants prevent bone loss and will support the structure of your face. This leads to a face that is not sagging, hollow, or drooping. The result is better self-esteem and confidence!
