Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants continue to grow in popularity, with over half a million people choosing to get them done annually. Long-lasting, attractive, and durable, dental implants can provide our patients with a permanent restoration for their missing tooth.
However, it is important to remember that despite the myriad of benefits of dental implants, this is still a surgical procedure. That means that some of our patients may unfortunately not be a good candidate for dental implants right away.
We here at Cane Bay Family Dentistry have seen firsthand the many advantages of dental implants, and we like our patients to be educated and informed about the procedure. This includes properly identifying who is a good candidate for them to help ensure the best possible outcome for anyone considering dental implants.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are made of three main components. The part that goes directly into your jawbone is a titanium screw. Titanium is used because the body does not reject it, but instead fuses with it in a process known as osseointegration. This helps keep it sturdy and strong in your mouth.
The titanium post attaches to the middle part of the implant, which is called the abutment. The abutment is the attachment that connects the post to the final part of the implant, called the crown or the restoration. This part of the implant is the piece that resembles a tooth. Together, these three parts make for a durable, attractive, and reliable dental implant.
Good Candidates for Dental Implants
Dental implants are a fantastic treatment option for many patients who have lost one or more tooth from their mouths. However, not everybody is going to be a good candidate for dental implants immediately. While dental implants have a 98 percent success rate, these contraindications may make it a challenge for some patients.
Ideal candidates for dental implants are individuals who are not pregnant and are in good general health. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes may not be good candidates for dental implants. We also do not advise that patients who are smokers get dental implants, as that may lead to a higher failure rate. Finally, a patient does need adequate bone mass in the jaw to help support the implant.
What if I’m Not a Good Candidate Right Now?
Please understand that just because you are not a good candidate for dental implants right now does not mean that you may never get dental implants. Simple lifestyle changes can make you a good candidate for them. Women who are pregnant may become good candidates after they give birth. Patients who stop smoking and using tobacco products may be able to get implants, too. If a diabetic patient can control their diabetes, they also may get implants. If a patient does not have enough jawbone mass, a bone graft can help make them better candidates for a dental implant.
Dental implants can transform your appearance, giving you a beautiful and complete smile.
